Who Am I?

Hello there!

Welcome to my personal and portfolio website. My name is Manpreet Khangura and I am a full stack developer based in Toronto. I enjoy creating all aspects of web/software applications including the back-end (i.e. business logic, databases, etc.) as well as the front-end (i.e. the visuals and user interactivity).

Currently, I am working full-time as a Web Developer for the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. Using my skills and experience with tools like PHP, Symfony, and Doctrine, I work within the Information & Technology Services Division to build and maintain applications which support the needs of Assembly staff.

Previously, I worked at REfficient, where I maintained a complex web platform used by our customers and staff for a variety of different purposes such as inventory control, purchase order generation, and order placement.

The majority of my experience thus far in my career has been with the LAMP and .NET stacks. However, I believe in using the right tool for the job and am not afraid to learn a new language or tool when needed.

Hobbies

Apart from creating stunning web apps and writing well-structured object-oriented code, I also have a number of other interests. These include:

  • Personal development/growth - I believe it is very important for everyone to get out of their comfort zone and try new things. One such activity that I took part in recently was to attend Improv Comedy classes in order to get better at thinking in the moment and being creative. The course was very fun and I learned a lot of new skills.
  • Staying active - I play beach volleyball, ball hockey, foosball, and shuffleboard. I also regularly attend yoga classes.
  • Music - I listen to top 40 and am a big fan of hip hop. My favourite instrument is the piano and I'm currently learning how to play.

REfficient

I have worked at REfficient, an eco-friendly marketplace specializing in Telecom and A/V equipment, since December 2012. Over the past few years, I've had the opportunity to be involved in making many exciting improvements to our web-based platform. Our platform is responsible for providing a smooth checkout process for our customers as well as to track inventory, orders, customer relationships, and provide analytical data to our team to facilitate better decision-making.

Achievements

Developed automated inventory addition tool which allowed for hundreds of listings to be created in minutes, saving the sales team many hours of manual input, and therefore creating the opportunity to work with a larger amount of suppliers and provide a vaster array of product selection for our customers to choose from.
Integrated an e-commerce solution into our platform which made it convenient for our customers to pay for invoices at any time of day, thereby speeding up the order process and freeing up time in the accounting department for other tasks.
Revamped internal warehouse and sales tracking tools allowing for fine-tuned search capability, saving time and effort.
Provided insight into trends affecting the business through the development of a dashboard and reporting tools.

Work Order Automation System

Work Order Automation System was my final college graduation project. I was the lead developer on the project and worked in a team of 4 to analyze, design, and create the final solution. The project was completed ahead of schedule and our group received an A on it.

Background

The idea for the project came from a team member who had previously worked at a job that dealt with work orders in the following way:

  1. If a manager had a need for a supply/service, then he/she would contact the vendor (by phone or email).
  2. The vendor would then get back to the manager with a quote.
  3. If the manager approved of the quote, he/she would then contact the finance department.
  4. Finance would then approve/disapprove payment and notify the manager.
  5. If approved, the manager would then contact the vendor to finalize the order.
  6. The work order information would then be archived into a MS Access database or filing system.

Although this approach worked, it had some limitations:

  1. Quotes would only get recorded if they were successful. History for rejected quotes was not archived.
  2. With no official way to record each step in the process, this information would very often be written down on paper where it could be easily lost or forgotten.
  3. Communication delays between the manager and vendor due to the non-real-time nature of the system.

Our proposed solution was a Work Order Automation System that would overcome these limitations and work in the following way:

  1. When the manager had a need, he/she would access their portal, select an appropriate vendor and fill out a form. Once submitted, this would cause a quote request to be created in the system.
  2. The vendor would now be able to view the manager's submitted quote request and at the same time complete the quote by filling out a form with prices for each item/service with tax rates and shipping fees.
  3. The system would then inform the manager about the quoted work order that he/she could then approve or reject.
  4. If approved, someone from finance would notice that an update had occurred in their portal. They would then approve or reject it. Once approved, an email would be sent to the manager and vendor so that the order could be processed by the vendor.
  5. Regardless of whether it was approved or rejected, the work order would be placed into history.

Development Process

During the analysis and design phases, our team continuously prepared and revised entity-relationship diagrams, data-flow diagrams, and user interface screens until all of the requirements were met. As a group, we decided to develop the project using ASP.NET with VB.NET code-behind and an Oracle database.

Due to my previous experience with ASP.NET, I acted as the lead developer implementing business logic for the login and administration screens, working on the CSS/JavaScript, and providing my time to help team members with ASP.NET-related questions.

The Result

The project was showcased in front of the class and a number of our professors. It was well received and our final grade for the project reflected that.
